Sparks police said Harold Miller was walking his large dog around 6:11 p.m. Saturday at Sparks Marina when he fired multiple shots at another dog to stop the two animals from fighting, KRNV reported.

Miller, 57, then walked off with his dog, KOLO reported. Witnesses called police, who detained him shortly after without incident. He still had the firearm in his possession. Investigators said he admitted to shooting the dog after it broke free from its collar.

It is unclear if the dog that was shot was being walked. It was described as about 10 pounds, KOLO reported. Police did not release its condition.

Miller was arrested and charged with discharging a weapon where a person may be endangered, and willful/malicious torture of an animal, KRNV reported.
