Kaden Ingram was shot and killed Saturday after his mother asked him to give her a memory card that she thought he had. Kaden told his mother, Fallon Harris, he didn’t have it. She had actually taken the device from her car, police said.

Police said Harris held her son at gunpoint before shooting him. The sound of the gunfire and the boy’s cries were caught on a home security camera. Police said Harris left the room to answer a phone call, then came back and shot the child a second time, WBBM reported.

Kaden’s father said he was told of the shooting shortly after it happened.

Lavell Ingram said of his son: “He was the joy of my life. He was everything a father could want in a child,” WLS reported.

He also said the boy’s death hurt but had kind words for Kaden’s mother, who has been charged with murder.

“His mom is a loving mom. She loved him more than she loved anything in the world,” Ingram told WLS.

Family members told the news station that she had been struggling with mental health and had seen a therapist the day before the incident.

“People need to know that mental illness is real,” Ingram told WLS.
