Alabama inmate on work release fatally shot in apparent ‘love triangle,’ police say

HOUSTON COUNTY, Ala. — An Alabama inmate free on a work release holiday pass was fatally shot on Friday by the estranged husband of a woman the victim was visiting, authorities said.

Lashawn Poke, 41, of Dothan died at a residence near Taylor, Alabama, WTVY reported.

Brent Guilford, 35, was charged with capital murder and surrendered to authorities at about 5 a.m. CST on Friday, according to the television station.

According to court records, Poke was serving time in Houston County Community Corrections, which allows inmates to work jobs outside jail, WDHN-TV reported. Poke had been in jail since December 2021, serving time for promoting prison contraband, according to the television station. He also had a domestic violence-strangulation charge that was going through the court system, court records show.

Corrections director Tony Weber said that Poke was scheduled to be released on Dec. 13, WTVY reported.

Guilford is accused of going to the residence where Poke and Guilford’s wife were meeting at about 3:35 a.m.CST and shooting the victim in an apparent jealous rage, according to the television station.

According to court records, Guilford’s wife filed a protection from abuse order against him on Nov. 2.
